Born on Dec. 15, 1913 in Fukushima Prefecture. Ito was elected to the House of Representatives in 1963. He became acting deputy prime minister on June 12, 1980 after the sudden death of then Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira during the campaign for general elections.
